Chengdu is the capital of China’s Sichuan Province and is home to 11 million people. It’s well worth a visit to see a city less touched by western influence and bustling with life. Chengdu is an attractive city with broad ring roads, treelined streets and several rivers flowing through it. It does have a rather severe pollution problem and there are many hazy humid days. But to see giant pandas at the breeding center or a stop-off before heading out to the nearby nature reserves is definitely worth the trip. What to doPeople’s Park or Renmin ParkThis attractive park has nice windy paths and leafy vistas throughout. There is a pond in the middle that you can rent boats to paddle around on. It also has a teahouse good for relaxing during the heat of the day. Sitting near one of the entrances is a large oddly shaped boulder. Getting thereIt’s near Sam’s Guesthouse of the Renmin Dong road and costs nothing. Wenshu MonasteryThis is Chengdu’s oldest and largest Buddhist temple. It was originally built during the Tang dynasty but was rebuilt using the Qing dynasty style. The complex consists of many different buildings and five separate halls and a museum detailing the monastery’s history. In the back of the complex is a large teahouse, perfect for relaxing and people watching. This monastery attracts local Buddhists who gather to worship. Getting thereTake bus number 16 to Renmin Zhong Lu. The Monastery is on cross street Wenshu Yuan Jie. Cost is 5 Yuan, about .80 cents Temple of the Marquis of WuThis temple is a restored Tang dynasty style built for Zhu Ge Liang, a Shu dynasty prime minister and war stategist.
